This project was born from an interest in identity and the stories and circumstances that make up who somebody is. I wanted to show a variation of perspectives so I asked the same question to 6 people of different ages, genders and backgrounds to see the ways that
perspective changes depending on the point in your life you are at.
Gillian Wearing’s work ‘Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You To Say’ influenced this project. Her candid videos and photographs reveal the disconnect between inner lives and public personas. They alternately embrace ironic, confessional, poignant, and unsettling sensibilities. Inspired by documentary television, Wearing’s portraits grant access to the inner lives of strangers and to the artist herself. Each photograph tells a story, it gives the viewer an insight into a deeper emotion that the subject is feeling rather than the surface level presumptions we make when looking at somebody.
