Rooted

‘Rooted’ is a photographic series that connects motherhood, patriarchy, and landscape through tight-angled nude imagery bound to a beach setting. Through celebration without sexualisation, the nude female form is liberated from the objectification of the male gaze. The work illustrates the transformation of the postpartum body, posing it in connection with nature.

This film follows the story of India, a 28 year old woman who escaped the chaos of urban life to find solace by the sea. The video unearths the beauty within her tumultuous journey of motherhood, exploring the connection between nature and the body. India’s narration of her story, paired with the tender visuals of everyday life, put ethnography as the main form of research within this film. As well as videos from the time spent in her environment, I have interspersed clips of feminist photography that inspired the making of this work, placing Indias story in a wider feminist context: using her story of motherhood as a lens to explore ideas of femininity.
